Restoration of a 20-foot alleyway, including utility relocation
This project involved environmental assessment to evaluate a No. 6 oil release, which occurred in a 20-foot wide alley in downtown Providence. Geotechnical evaluations, including Ground Penetrating Radar (G.P.R) was performed to locate the tank and area utilities and to understand potential impacts that the excavation may have on the foundation of a 150-year-old adjacent building. A shoring plan was also prepared and once the plan was finalized, bid documents were prepared, bids were solicited, and a contractor was selected.
Construction involved; removal of side walk, curbing, cobbles and brick for reuse; excavation and removal of oily saturated soil; and then 2 - 8,000 gallon oil tanks were removed. Excavations extended to 26 feet below grade and several feet into groundwater. Upon removal of the tanks, 1,000 tons oily impacted soil was removed. Dewatering required pumping of over 50,000 gallons of contaminated groundwater with pretreatment.
In order to allow construction to proceed, catch basins and storm sewer lines were removed and reinstalled. A water main was removed and a new water service was installed into the adjacent building. Upon completion of the work, the site was backfilled and reconstructed with new curbing, side walks, including cobble and brick sections. |
